Strengthening Our Relationship with Allah

The greatest relationship in the life of a believer is the relationship with Allah Almighty. Everything else in our lives has a beginning and an end, but our connection with our Creator is the foundation upon which true success is built.

In the busyness of modern life, it is easy to become distracted by work, family responsibilities, financial concerns and everyday commitments. We may perform our prayers and fulfil our responsibilities, yet sometimes our hearts need a reminder to reconnect with Allah.

Tarbiah provides an opportunity for this reflection.

The purpose of Tarbiah is not simply to acquire knowledge. It is to develop ourselves spiritually and morally so that the knowledge we gain influences the way we live. It encourages us to examine our relationship with Allah and ask ourselves whether we truly rely upon Him, remember Him and place His guidance at the centre of our lives.

One of the most important foundations of this relationship is Tawheed: recognising that Allah alone is our Creator, Sustainer and One worthy of worship.

When a believer understands Tawheed deeply, it changes the way they view life. Success and difficulty are no longer seen simply through worldly circumstances. We understand that Allah is in control, that nothing happens outside His knowledge and wisdom, and that our responsibility is to obey Him and place our trust in Him.

This does not mean that life will always be easy. Every person experiences difficulties, disappointments and moments of uncertainty. However, faith gives us a different way of responding to these challenges.

A believer turns towards Allah in times of difficulty rather than away from Him.

Du’a is one of the greatest expressions of this relationship. When we raise our hands and ask Allah for our needs, we acknowledge our dependence upon Him. We recognise that we are weak and that Allah is Al-Qawiyy, the Most Strong.

Sometimes we may make du’a and not immediately see the result we hoped for. This should never cause us to lose hope. Allah knows what we do not know, and His wisdom extends beyond our limited understanding.

Developing a stronger relationship with Allah also requires gratitude. We often notice what is missing from our lives while overlooking the countless blessings we already possess.

Our health, families, homes, food, safety, children, friendships and ability to worship are all blessings from Allah.

Gratitude should therefore become part of our daily lives. When we recognise Allah’s blessings, our hearts become more content and we become less consumed by comparison with others.

Another important aspect of strengthening our relationship with Allah is regular Qur’an recitation and reflection. The Qur’an is not merely a book to be recited; it is guidance for how we live. Taking time to understand its message and apply it to our lives allows the Qur’an to influence our character, decisions and relationships.

Prayer is another essential connection. Salah provides five daily opportunities to pause from worldly activities and stand before our Creator. When performed with sincerity and concentration, prayer becomes more than an obligation—it becomes a source of peace and strength.

Our relationship with Allah should also be reflected in our treatment of other people. Good character, honesty, patience, forgiveness, kindness and generosity are all important expressions of Islamic faith.

We should therefore ask ourselves regularly: Has my relationship with Allah improved? Has my prayer improved? Has my character improved? Am I more patient with my family? Do I help others? Do I remember Allah during both ease and difficulty?

These questions can help us turn knowledge into action.

Tarbiah programmes and community gatherings provide valuable opportunities for such reflection. They allow us to learn from the Qur’an and Sunnah, listen to reminders, encourage one another and return home with renewed determination.

May Allah strengthen our hearts, increase our love for Him, help us place our trust in Him and enable us to worship Him with sincerity.

May He make the Qur’an the light of our hearts, Salah the comfort of our souls and obedience to Him the purpose of our lives.

Ameen.

The Tarbiah (moral and spiritual upbringing) of the younger generation is especially crucial in today’s world. These youth are the ones who will eventually step into our roles.
